SMS to the emergency services

Emergency in the Mountains-No phone signal..Then read on..

The weather out on the hills is paticularly bad at the moment and with that comes an increase in people calling out the emergency services.  Being in the wild areas however can often mean a poor or weak phone connection so getting that help can be troublesome.

Although not a new service it is well worth knowing that you can send a request for help by text which doesn’t need as strong a signal as call.

The emergency SMS service was originally designed to let deaf, hard of hearing and speech-impaired people in the UK send an SMS text message to the UK 999 service from where it will be passed to the Police, Ambulance, Fire service, Mountain Rescue or Coastguard.  It is now being used more and more in the mountain enviroment.

Simply by sending an SMS message to 999 you can call for help and the emergency services will be able to reply to you.

Please remember though that this is for emergencies only and not for asking the way off a hill.

Go out out properly prepared with the right of knowledge and equipment and you should have a good day.
